Al Shahaniya Sports Club (Arabic: نادي الشحانية الرياضي), is a Qatari sports club based in Al-Shahaniya, a town 20 km from the capital Doha. Founded in 1998, the most prominent team of the club is the football team which plays in the Qatari Second Division. The club's home ground is Grand Hamad Stadium.
History
Al Shahaniya was founded on 27 December 1998, under the name Al-Nasr, under the decision of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Eid Al Thani, who was the chairman of the Public Authority for youth and sports at the time. The club was considered as the spiritual successor of Al Nasr SC, an amateur football club founded in 1951. The club, whose name translates to "victory", became notable for being the first Qatari football team to play against clubs outside of the country as well as the first Qatari club to recruit foreigners.
At the beginning of its establishment, the club's headquarters were located in Al Jemailiya. In 2001, the club relocated to Al-Shahaniya, which is approximately 20 km northwest of Doha, under the decision of Sheikh Jassim bin Thamer al Thani, who was vice president of the Qatar Olympic Committee at that time. It was furnished with its own stadium and headquarters, although the stadium has primarily been used for training due to its limited capacity.
In 2004, the club changed its name to Al Shahaniya by decision of the board of directors, in order to better represent the region where it is based.
Klubbens største triumf kom i 2013, da de vandt Qatari Second Division og dermed oprykkede til Qatari Stars League for første gang. Siden da har Al-Shahaniya været en fast bestanddel i ligaen og har generelt placeret sig i midten af tabellen.
Al-Shahaniya har en stor og dedikeret fanklub, kendt som "The Pride of Al Shahaniya." Fansene er kendt for deres passionerede støtte til holdet og skaber en fantastisk atmosfære på Grand Hamad Stadium.
Klubbens nuværende hovedtræner er spanske José Murcia, som har været i spidsen for holdet siden 2020. Al-Shahaniya har en række erfarne spillere i truppen, herunder den qatarske landsholdsspiller Mohammed Muntari og den brasilianske angriber Júnior Dutra.
I den igangværende sæson i Qatari Stars League ligger Al-Shahaniya i øjeblikket på 9. pladsen ud af 12 hold. Klubben har vist lovende resultater i løbet af sæsonen og er i en god position til at sikre sig en plads i den øverste halvdel af tabellen.
